Now: Iran & HALT; Members Sat 1:30; Action: Women’s March Sun 1/19

716-332-3904 1/7/20 wnypeace.org

Dear Friends,

The week (and month) is shaping up to be very busy, so you likely have to pick and choose what you can actually manage! Si, Se Puede …. We Shall Overcome! Harambe/Together!

Thanks to the many who came out to join with Women In Black for the special National Day of Action! With he-who-shall-not-be-named/he-who’s-impeached threatening 52 Iranian cultural sites (~=aiming at civilians and civil society), we need a Congressional resolution to stop US aggression towards Iran.

Please call your Congressperson (switchboard is 202-224-3121 – or Reps Higgins or Reed if you don’t have one) to urge a stop through the War Powers Act to any war on Iran, as well as any more troops to the Middle East. They may vote tomorrow!

Tonight we also have the Community Conversation on #HALTSolitary, 6pm at the Crucial Center (230 Moselle, Buffalo). All are welcome to hear first-hand accounts, experience a model solitary cell, hear from officials – including Legislator April Baskin, experts, and convenient info re free Albany lobby trip on January 21. Hope to see you there!

We hope, too, you’ll attend the January 11, 1:30pm membership meeting at the WNYPC, NRC Bldg, 1272 Delaware Ave, Buffalo 14209 (entrance & parking round back). All are welcome, and can bring a snack to share if you like. We’ll cover strategic planning, taskforces and committees. These are critical times for working together.

The buzz is building for the Women’s March Sunday January 19, 1:30pm, part of a Weekend of Action! We’re excited that WNY Resistance Revival Chorus will kick us off, after an Indigenous welcome. We can also confirm that we’ll feature Indigenous Women (as will the National March – many from here will have just been there), have Vonetta Rhodes share spoken word, more music from Phenomenal Ladies of Rhythm and Roc Da Mic, chanting lead by Jennifer Page, and inspiring speakers!

Don’t miss the sign-making and a showing of the Doctrine of Discovery documentary on Saturday (3:30-5:30pm at the WNYPC, see above). Materials will be on hand (and free will offering), as will Women’s March T-shirts! Of course, you’ll want to be at the wonderful Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Celebration later on Sunday (6-8pm at Kleinhans). See more on our website at wnypeace.org.

If you can free yourself up on a Tuesday for criminal justice reform, there are still the two lobby trips to Albany – all day (~5:30am to late evening), fully funded. Dates, focus, and links for reserving a seat are:
– Tues, Jan 14, to Release our Aging People from Prison (go to bit.ly/35ZDluL to #FreeOurElders);
– Tues, Jan 21, (https://www.facebook.com/events/564954490972330/) to advocate for legislators to pass the #HALTsolitary act.
Of note, there are two advisory committee meetings on January 14, 10am-ish, if you can better do that than a whole-day trip. Please see our website.)

As always, more below, including regularly scheduled events & vigils, and more at wnypeace.org, and on our facebook page, twitter (@wnypeace), and Instagram (wnypeace)!

Peace, Thanks, Solidarity, and yes Love.

Climate Emergency Petition
Please sign on to the WNY Youth Climate Council petition to the Buffalo Common Council to declare a Climate Emergency. They want to get as many signatures as possible on paper or on the internet! So all are wanted (not just the young people!) to sign on and to help make a difference here in Buffalo. The online petition is here:

Please send a comment regarding Liquid Natural Gas (LNG)-by-Rail. The Comment period ends on January 13, 2020 @ 11:59 PM
It’s very easy to comment. And you can do so anonymously, if desired. Go to: https://www.regulations.gov/docket?D=PHMSA-2018-0025 and push the “Comment Now!” button associated with “Hazardous Materials: Liquefied Natural Gas by Rail”. Here are a few bullet points:

a) The Federal Railway Agency (FRA) is currently testing the suviveability of
DOT-113 tanker cars that will be used to transport LNG on rails. These real-world
tests include collisions and punctures using DOT-113 tankers filled with LNG —
extremely critical information. The FRA study will conclude in May 2020, five
months after the conclusion of the comment period for LNG-by-Rail. Therefore, rail
experts, safety experts and the general public will be unable to make specific
comments regarding the suitability of the DOT-113 tanker to safely carry LNG. No
consideration of LNG-by-rail should be made until the FRA’s test results have been
published — at least.

b) Sandia National Laboratories found the thermal hazard distance for LNG to be
twice that of Bakken crude oil. This makes LNG-by-rail accident much more dangerous
to life, limb and property, than an accident involving Bakken crude by rail.
Shipping LNG-by-rail substantially increases the risk to everyone. We don’t need
another, even-more dangerous “bomb” train on the rails.

c) In a recent lecture, Cornell Professor Bob Howarth “[The planet] is at 1.1 degC
now and we are are now on target to reach 1.5 degC by 2029….if we want to keep the
planet well below 2 degC we have got to reduce methane emissions,….absolutely
must”. Methane emissions will occur when LNG tankers are punctured in an accident,
as well as during the loading and unloading the tankers. One LNG unit train
consisting of 100 tanker cars carries the equivalent annual CO2 emissions of 78,226
vehicles.

d) The National Association of State Fire Marshals is strongly opposed to
LNG-by-Rail. Their comment is here:
https://www.regulations.gov/document?D=PHMSA-2018-0025-0096

You can find the sources for the statements in my comment, which is posted on the docket: https://www.regulations.gov/document?D=PHMSA-2018-0025-0097

No Nuclear Waste over the Peace Bridge

Ask Gov. Cuomo to Declare a Climate Emergency
Capitol district resident and longtime activist Sandy Steubling is organizing a state-wide call-in effort. Please help out, and let me know if you did! Wish Gov. Cuomo a happy new year…..and then:
“Governor Cuomo, Please declare a climate emergency for the state of New York and immediately ban all new fossil fuel infrastructure.”
Tel: 518-474-8390, press (1) or Tweet: @NYGovCuomo

Why? From a recent UN report:
– levels of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere reached a record high in 2018.
– We are on track for a temperature rise of over 5.7°F by the end of the century.
– We have to reduce emissions by 7.6% each year between 2020 and 2030 to limit
global temperature rise to 1.5°C (2.7°F).
– The G20 countries are responsible for 78% of global GHG emissions.

Stand Up for Global Peace
The world is facing a 25-year peak in violent conflict. It is the main cause of human suffering today – trapping millions of civilians in conflict and uprooting 66 million people from their homes. According to the Institute for Economics and Peace, violence containment costs the world $14.3 trillion each year. There must be another way.
Over the past two years, a coalition of peacebuilding, humanitarian, and faith-based organizations have drafted a bill that would address the root causes of violence and fragility. The resulting legislation has been introduced in both the House and Senate as the Global Fragility Act (H.R. 1580/S.727). This bill would require the U.S. government – in collaboration with civil society – to develop a 10 year strategy to enhance stability and to reduce violence and fragility around the world.
We know that too much foreign assistance and Pentagon spending is spent on treating the symptoms of violence instead of its causes. By passing this law, the U.S. will be able to more effectively prevent violence around the world and reduce its enormous cost on families.
Today, hundreds of faith advocates will lift up the Global Fragility Act as part of their lobby day ask for the annual Ecumenical Advocacy Days. It is important for YOU to add your voice as well. Together, we CAN build a more Just and Peaceful World for All! Take action today to support the Global Fragility Act of 2019! https://p2a.co/Mc4rH0c
