We will then discuss alternatives to our current system: one based in grassroots democracy and community rights, and one that honors and recognizes our responsibility to Nature.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.garn.org\/rights-of-nature\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Rights of Nature<\/strong><\/span><\/a>\u00a0is an international movement dedicated to a paradigm shift from our current system, which views nature as property or resources to be used\u00a0for human consumption, to one deserving of respect and rights similar to those of humans (and, in the United States, corporations).\u00a0This means a river, mountain range, forest, watersheds, or ocean could have the right to exist and flourish without human-caused disruption, granting them legal standing so people and communities could defend those rights in court on behalf of the ecosystem.
