SUMMARY:Sierra Club Book Discussion on "Scenic Treasures of WNY"
DESCRIPTION:Join Sierra Club – Atlantic Chapter – Niagara Group for a fun and informative discussion of Bruce Kershner’s award-winning book\, Secret Places: Scenic Treasures of Western New York and Southern Ontario with Bill McKeever\, as part of their their Environmental Series. \nIn 1994\, Eternal Flames Falls was virtually unknown\, a handful of ‘naturist’ would skinnydip at Zoar Valley\, and only local kids knew the hidden routes to get to hear the ‘Great Waves’ in the Niagara Gorge. Then Secret Places: Scenic Treasures of Western New York and Southern Ontario crashed on the scenes and started telling the world about our secret and scenic hidden wonders in Bruce Kershner’s award-winning book. \nThis talk will discuss the advocacy work done by Bruce in the 1990s and 2000s and the impact on the Western New York community and why it’s important to share these and all “secret places’ ‘ everywhere. \n  \nPresenter’s bio:\nCo-author of Secret Places of Western New York; 25 Scenic Hikes\,  Bill McKeever served from 1999 to 2004 as Buffalo Audubon’s first Executive Director. During his tenure\, he worked with Bruce Kershner on environmental advocacy projects protecting the old-growth forests of DeVeaux Woods\, Zoar Valley\, and Allegany State Park.Bill and his wife\, Jennifer Hillman\, teamed up with Kershner’s literary estate to reimagine\, update and bring back to the community this much loved\, award-winning hiking book.\n  \n

SUMMARY:War Industry Resisters Network - Week of Action
DESCRIPTION:War Industry Resisters Network – Week of Action! (April 17th-24th): Check out all the folks taking action during the Week of Action!  Join a group near you!\nClearly\, there are no winners in the terrible war in Ukraine — except one: U.S. and British military contractors who will carry all their increased profits all the way to the bank. \nBig Campaign contributions. 700 lobbyists. Militaristic think tanks. Government advisory boards. Hiring 1700 former Pentagon officials and stacking the government with their own people. These military contractors have numerous ways to determine Pentagon budgets\, shape our foreign policy\, create war fever\, and pick our friends and enemies. \nThe result is $768\,000\,000\,000. That’s $768 billion dollars. Democrats and Republicans in Congress just passed the most bloated military budget ever. That’s also $768 billion worth of new fossil fuel emissions to be created by the single biggest single source of carbon pollution on earth: the U.S. war machine. \nThe organizing for the new War Industry Resisters Network is full speed ahead.  We’ve had over a hundred folks join our organizing calls and over 500 join our previous webinar.  Join us as we continue to resist the dangerous war profiteering companies! \nYou can also join our next and final organizing meeting before the week on  Thursday\, April 14\, 6:30 pm EDT.  Zoom Link.

SUMMARY:CEJ Virtual Town Hall: Health Equity in WNY
DESCRIPTION:Affordable\, accessible\, culturally competent\, and comprehensive healthcare is crucial for the immediate and long-term pandemic recovery of our communities. \nMore than 1 million New Yorkers remain uninsured and on average\, 50% of New Yorkers with private health insurance struggle to access healthcare due to cost and barriers to care. If the U.S. had a public health and universal healthcare infrastructure comparable to those in other high-income countries\, an estimated 40% of COVID deaths could have been avoided. Tens of thousands of lives could have been saved. \nNew York lawmakers have a historic opportunity to respond to the ongoing healthcare crisis by passing healthcare reforms that bring immediate relief to New Yorkers and that put our state on the road to universal healthcare. \nJoin Campaign for NY Health and state legislators to hear from upstate advocates about the systemic changes that are needed in order to make healthcare a right in our state and to learn what you can do to help win healthcare for all this year. \nCo-sponsored by Campaign for New York Health\, NYS Poor People’s Campaign\, New York State Nurses Association\, Coalition for Economic Justice\, Melanated Moms\, Syracuse United Neighbors\, ARISE.

DESCRIPTION:The Partnership for the Public Good will join Legal Aid Bureau of Buffalo\, NYCLU\, #HALTsolitary Campaign\, and others on Monday\, March 28 at 10 a.m. via Zoom for a virtual press conference ahead of New York State’s April 1 budget deadline in opposition to Governor Hochul’s proposed reform rollbacks. We will also discuss misconceptions about the 2019 bail law\, including vested powers officers\, prosecutors\, and judges underutilize. SUMMARY:Webinar: How will the Ukraine crisis reshape global politics?
DESCRIPTION:No matter how Russia’s bloody invasion of Ukraine ends\, the repercussions are enormous and will be felt for many years–perhaps decades–to come. What will be the consequences of a more united and militarized NATO? How will the reshuffling of energy markets affect global politics? Has this destroyed the prospects for nuclear nonproliferation and disarmament? Will there be a stronger Russia/China alliance? How will the Global South be affected? We’ll discuss these questions and many more with two of the greatest global analysts on the left: Dr. Gerald Horne and Walden Bello

Denise also works on environmental health and justice issues\, addressing the needs of local communities who are impacted by toxic contamination and the failure of regulatory agencies to protect them. She leads PSR-LA’s efforts to ensure a full cleanup of the Santa Susana Field Laboratory (SSFL)\, a former nuclear and rocket testing facility near Los Angeles. Denise also serves on the board of the Alliance for Nuclear Accountability (ANA)\, a national network of organizations that works to address issues of nuclear weapons production and waste cleanup. She holds a BA in psychology from the University of Michigan and a master’s degree in theater arts from California State University Los Angeles. \nAbout NHPA’s bi-weekly Zoom Peace & Justice Conversation Series: 2020’s upheavals brought us to a new moment of reckoning and possibility. SUMMARY:International Relations & Militarism Today
DESCRIPTION:By any measure the pain and suffering caused by 21st century imperialism is staggering. Millions of  people\, mostly in the Middle East and South Asia\, have died or been displaced by the war on terrorism initiated in 2001. These figures include the untold thousands who have died directly from war and violence in Libya\, Syria\, Yemen\, Bahrain\, and elsewhere in the Middle East\, South Asia\, and North Africa and indirectly through “hybrid “wars against such countries as Iran\, Venezuela\, and Cuba. \nConcomitant to war and violence\, the 2022 US military budget endorsed by both political parties will exceed $778 billion. \nWhat is the history of US militarism\, what Andrew Bacevich calls “the permanent war economy”? \nWhat are connections between the military/industrial complex and the global needs of capitalism? \nWhat are the current sources of international tensions and possible war today? \nWhat is behind US policy towards countries including China\, Russia\, Ukraine\, Iran\, Venezuela\, and Cuba? \nHow should the peace movement respond to militarism and imperialism today? \nHarry Targ\, Purdue Professor of Political Science\, Emeritus will initiate discussion of these critical and complicated issues. Targ\, a long time activist\, is current a Co-Chair of the Committees of Correspondence for Democracy and Socialism CCDS\, a member of the Wisconsin Peace Action steering committee\, and blogs at www.heartlandradical.blogspot.com
