SUMMARY:Our Work in the Days Ahead: a conversation for antiracist white people with Dr. Angela Davis
DESCRIPTION:On Thur 1/16/25 @ 8pm ET\, just four days before the inauguration\, Dr. Angela Davis will join SURJ in a conversation about white people’s work in the days ahead. \nhttps://www.mobilize.us/surj/event/748825/?utm_source=20250114_nod_adrecruit_event1  \nWhat lessons from past freedom struggles can help us face our present political reality? How do we adapt to dire\, shifting circumstances without losing sight of a long-haul vision for change? Where do we find hope? \nJoin SURJ to explore these questions and more with Dr. Angela Davis\, a key leader in movements for racial\, economic\, and gender justice for the last 50 years. From prison abolition to Palestinian solidarity\, Dr. Davis’ writing\, activism\, and teachings have shaped our modern movements for change. In this conversation\, Dr. Davis will ground us in lessons from revolutionary movements around the globe and offer her assessment of where we go from here. \nSURJ is the largest organization in the US that explicitly organizes white communities for justice. We work to undermine the power of the far right and mobilize majority-white communities into multi-racial movements for change. All are welcome to join this conversation. \nRegister to receive a recording. Live ASL and captions provided. \nhttps://www.mobilize.us/surj/event/748825/?utm_source=20250114_nod_adrecruit_event1

SUMMARY:PANYS Book Talk: Green Card Soldier by Sofya Aptekar (Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:Join Peace Action New York State (PANYS) for an online discussion on military recruitment practices targeting low-income and immigrant youth and how to respond with sustainable options. \nLeading the discussion will be author Sofya Aptekar\, an Associate Professor at CUNY School of Labor and Urban Studies. She will be joined by Ramón Mejía\, National Organizer for the Grassroots Global Justice Alliance. \nWhile the popular image of the US military is one of citizen soldiers protecting their country\, the reality is that nearly 5 percent of all first-time military recruits are noncitizens. In Green Card Soldier\, Sofya Aptekar talks to more than seventy noncitizen soldiers from twenty-three countries\, including some who were displaced by conflict after the US military entered their homeland. Their stories—stitched through with colonial legacies\, white supremacy\, exploitation\, and patriarchy—show how the tensions between deservingness and suspicion shape their enlistment\, service\, and identities. \nRamón Mejía enlisted in the Marine Corps at the age of 18 to support his family. His experience in the invasion of Iraq in 2003 led him to convert to Islam and develop into an outspoken advocate and organizer against U.S. wars and the growing militarization of our communities. \nGiving voice to a little-heard group of immigrants\, Green Card Soldier shines a cold light on the complex workings of US empire\, globalized militarism\, and citizenship. It highlights the need for united action to defend immigrant and LGBTQ rights\, end white supremacy and promote anti-militarism. \n\nThe event fee is $25 for general admission\, $10 for students and those on a low income. All proceeds to benefit the advocacy work of Peace Action New York State. Register here.

SUMMARY:'African Americans Against the Bomb' book club with Vincent Intondi begins
DESCRIPTION:In February 2023 World BEYOND War will be holding a weekly discussion each of four weeks of African Americans Against the Bomb with the author Vincent Intondi as part of a small group WBW book club limited to a group of 18 participants. WBW will buy each participant an electronic version of the book (a Kindle\, a Nook\, or a Google Play version). We’ll let you know which parts of the book will be discussed each week along with the Zoom details to access the discussions. \nWhen: For one hour on four Fridays\, February 3\, 10\, 17\, 24\, 2023. The time is 19:00 UTC (similar to GMT)\, at 9 a.m. in Honolulu\, 11 a.m. in Los Angeles\, 1 pm in Mexico City\, 2 pm in New York\, 7 pm in London\, 10 p.m. in Moscow\, and on Saturday at 6 am in Sydney\, 8 am in Auckland. \n \nWhere: Zoom (details to be shared upon registration) \nThis is a small group series with limited space of up to 18 people. Sign up to reserve your spot and allow for enough time to receive the book. We look forward to reading and discussing this important book with you! \nAbout the Book: Well before Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr. spoke out against nuclear weapons\, African Americans were protesting the Bomb. Historians have generally ignored African Americans when studying the anti-nuclear movement\, yet they were some of the first citizens to protest Truman’s decision to drop atomic bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945. Now for the first time\, African Americans Against the Bomb tells the compelling story of those Black activists who fought for nuclear disarmament by connecting the nuclear issue with the fight for racial equality. \nIntondi shows that from early on\, Blacks in America saw the use of atomic bombs as a racial issue\, asking why such enormous resources were being spent building nuclear arms instead of being used to improve impoverished communities. Black activists’ fears that race played a role in the decision to deploy atomic bombs only increased when the U.S. threatened to use nuclear weapons in Korea in the 1950s and Vietnam a decade later. For black leftists in Popular Front groups\, the nuclear issue was connected to colonialism: the U.S. obtained uranium from the Belgian controlled Congo and the French tested their nuclear weapons in the Sahara. \nBy expanding traditional research in the history of the nuclear disarmament movement to look at Black liberals\, clergy\, artists\, musicians\, and civil rights leaders\, Intondi reveals the links between the Black freedom movement in America and issues of global peace. From Langston Hughes through Lorraine Hansberry to President Obama\, African Americans Against the Bomb offers an eye-opening account of the continuous involvement of African Americans who recognized that the rise of nuclear weapons was a threat to the civil rights of all people. \nReviews: “This exclusive focus on anti-nuclear activism provides a much-needed addition to the small but growing scholarship on those who opposed nuclear weapons throughout the Cold War and beyond. Intondi’s narrative is detail-oriented yet readable\, and examines a vast array of Black voices discussing nuclear weapons within the broader contexts of civil rights\, colonialism\, and peace. He uses an impressive array of Black newspapers\, as well as a large archival base\, to cover the anti- nuclear sentiments of clergy\, union leaders\, civil rights organizers\, pacifists\, civic leaders\, and more.” — Kyle Harvey ― Canadian Journal of History \n\n“The Civil Rights Movement did not exist in an historical vacuum. Dr. King spoke of the need to fight against ‘racism\, materialism\, and militarism\,’ and Intondi’s stirring narrative effectively shows how nuclear disarmament was part of the broader struggle. This is an important read for those who are interested in properly understanding the black freedom movement and U.S. foreign policy.” — Benjamin Todd Jealous ― former President and CEO of the NAACP \n“Intondi’s work provides a significant historiographical contribution to the history of antinuclear activism in the United States…Intondi’s particular focus on African Americans illustrates the struggles they faced to have their message heard and to not be restricted in the types of activism they could engage in.” — Javan D. Frazier ― H-War \n“The African American contribution to nuclear discourse should be deemed an essential part of the conversation on the fraught history of American nuclear development. Intondi’s well-written\, well-researched book makes certain these efforts will be known.” — Gerald Horne\, John and Rebecca Moores Professor of History ― University of Houston \n“Intondi’s work provides a significant historiographical contribution to the history of antinuclear activism in the United States . . . Intondi’s particular focus on African Americans illustrates the struggles they faced to have their message heard and to not be restricted in the types of activism they could engage in.” — Javan D. Frazier ― H-War\, H-Net Reviews \n“Intondi has produced a well-researched\, succinct account of African American involvement in the crusade to contain the threat of atomic warefare . . . Highly recommended” — J.H. Smith ― CHOICE \n“As a young man I was moved by two issues\, civil rights and the threat of nuclear war\, and it took me many years to understand how those crises were inseparable. Vincent Intondi’s original research will shake the complacent assumption that the civil rights and anti-nuclear movements could be segregated. Intondi shows that ever since the Bomb first was dropped on people of color in 1945\, African-Americans have been in the forefront of the campaign to stop the deployment of nuclear weapons. He corrects a historical misunderstanding and contributes to an important new perspective on our history. A brilliant first book by a young historian seeing the world with new eyes.” — Tom Hayden ― Director of the Peace and Justice Resource Center \n“To his great credit\, Intondi’s study connects two strands of scholarship that are often kept separate\, namely peace history and the black freedom struggle . . . [H]is book provides much-needed context for those who\, hopefully\, will explore such topics. We need more research on activists’ efforts to connect opposition to nuclear weapons (and peace issues more broadly) with the black freedom struggle.” — Robbie Lieberman ― American Historical Review \n“African Americans Against the Bomb―a well-written\, well-researched historical study by Vincent Intondi―explores an important subject: African-American resistance to nuclear weapons…Intondi’s pioneering study will serve as an important guide to this intriguing subject.” — Lawrence S. Wittner ― Nonproliferation Review \n“Built on solid archival research\, African Americans Against the Bomb raises as many questions as it answers\, but it remains an important contribution to broadening our scholarly conceptions of nuclear history . . . The greatest strength of Intondi’s work is in providing an overview of the links between the black freedom struggle\, colonialism\, and nuclear weapons.” — Sean L. Malloy ― The Journal of American History \n\nAbout the Author: Vincent Intondi is a Professor of History and Director of the Institute for Race\, Justice\, and Civic Engagement at Montgomery College in Takoma Park\, Maryland. From 2009-2017\, Intondi was Director of Research for American University’s Nuclear Studies Institute in Washington\, DC. Prior to teaching at Montgomery College\, Intondi was an Associate Professor of History at Seminole State College in Sanford\, Florida. Intondi regularly works with organizations exploring ways to include more diverse voices in the nuclear disarmament movement. His research focuses on the intersection of race and nuclear weapons. He is the author of the book\, African Americans Against the Bomb: Nuclear Weapons\, Colonialism\, and the Black Freedom Movement with Stanford University Press. \n\n\nEmail: vincent.intondi@montgomerycollege.edu\nTwitter: @VincentIntondi\nWebsite: http://vincentintondi.com\n\n\nStart: Friday\, February 03\, 2023 • 2:00 PM • Eastern Daylight Time (US & Canada) (GMT-04:00)\nEnd: Friday\, February 24\, 2023 • 3:00 PM • Eastern Daylight Time (US & Canada) (GMT-04:00)\nHost Contact Info: david@worldbeyondwar.org\nVirtual event

SUMMARY:WNY Refugee Film Festival: "Accept The Call" & Talkback with Director Eunice Lau & Yusuf Abdurahman
DESCRIPTION:Director Eunice Lau and film subject Yusuf Abdurahman will be Journey’s Ends’ special guests for this talkback! The event is FREE & virtual.\n\nTo register: https://tinyurl.com/AcceptTheCall4\nTo watch the trailer: https://www.wnyrff.org/accept\n\n\nTwenty-five years after Yusuf Abdurahman left Somalia as a refugee to begin his life anew in Minnesota — which has the largest population of Somalis in the United States — his worst fear is realized when his 19-year-old-son Zacharia is arrested in an FBI counter-terrorism sting operation.\n\nThrough the eyes of an anguished father desperate to understand why his young son would choose to leave his American life behind to attempt to join the Islamic State (ISIS) in Syria\, Accept the Call vividly explores racism and prejudice against immigrants\, the rise of targeted recruitment by radicalized groups\, and the struggles of Muslim youth growing up in the US today.\n\nThis intimate film captures the story of a father and son attempting to mend their relationship after breaking each other’s hearts\, showing how a parent’s worry for their children is a universal predisposition.

DESCRIPTION:Join Sierra Club – Atlantic Chapter – Niagara Group for a fun and informative discussion of Bruce Kershner’s award-winning book\, Secret Places: Scenic Treasures of Western New York and Southern Ontario with Bill McKeever\, as part of their their Environmental Series. \nIn 1994\, Eternal Flames Falls was virtually unknown\, a handful of ‘naturist’ would skinnydip at Zoar Valley\, and only local kids knew the hidden routes to get to hear the ‘Great Waves’ in the Niagara Gorge. Then Secret Places: Scenic Treasures of Western New York and Southern Ontario crashed on the scenes and started telling the world about our secret and scenic hidden wonders in Bruce Kershner’s award-winning book. \nThis talk will discuss the advocacy work done by Bruce in the 1990s and 2000s and the impact on the Western New York community and why it’s important to share these and all “secret places’ ‘ everywhere. \n  \nPresenter’s bio:\nCo-author of Secret Places of Western New York; 25 Scenic Hikes\,  Bill McKeever served from 1999 to 2004 as Buffalo Audubon’s first Executive Director. During his tenure\, he worked with Bruce Kershner on environmental advocacy projects protecting the old-growth forests of DeVeaux Woods\, Zoar Valley\, and Allegany State Park.Bill and his wife\, Jennifer Hillman\, teamed up with Kershner’s literary estate to reimagine\, update and bring back to the community this much loved\, award-winning hiking book.\n  \n

SUMMARY:War Industry Resisters Network - Week of Action
DESCRIPTION:War Industry Resisters Network – Week of Action! (April 17th-24th): Check out all the folks taking action during the Week of Action!  Join a group near you!\nClearly\, there are no winners in the terrible war in Ukraine — except one: U.S. and British military contractors who will carry all their increased profits all the way to the bank. \nBig Campaign contributions. 700 lobbyists. Militaristic think tanks. Government advisory boards. Hiring 1700 former Pentagon officials and stacking the government with their own people. These military contractors have numerous ways to determine Pentagon budgets\, shape our foreign policy\, create war fever\, and pick our friends and enemies. \nThe result is $768\,000\,000\,000. That’s $768 billion dollars. Democrats and Republicans in Congress just passed the most bloated military budget ever. That’s also $768 billion worth of new fossil fuel emissions to be created by the single biggest single source of carbon pollution on earth: the U.S. war machine. \nThe organizing for the new War Industry Resisters Network is full speed ahead.  We’ve had over a hundred folks join our organizing calls and over 500 join our previous webinar.  Join us as we continue to resist the dangerous war profiteering companies! \nYou can also join our next and final organizing meeting before the week on  Thursday\, April 14\, 6:30 pm EDT.  Zoom Link.

SUMMARY:CEJ Virtual Town Hall: Health Equity in WNY
DESCRIPTION:Affordable\, accessible\, culturally competent\, and comprehensive healthcare is crucial for the immediate and long-term pandemic recovery of our communities. \nMore than 1 million New Yorkers remain uninsured and on average\, 50% of New Yorkers with private health insurance struggle to access healthcare due to cost and barriers to care. If the U.S. had a public health and universal healthcare infrastructure comparable to those in other high-income countries\, an estimated 40% of COVID deaths could have been avoided. Tens of thousands of lives could have been saved. \nNew York lawmakers have a historic opportunity to respond to the ongoing healthcare crisis by passing healthcare reforms that bring immediate relief to New Yorkers and that put our state on the road to universal healthcare. \nJoin Campaign for NY Health and state legislators to hear from upstate advocates about the systemic changes that are needed in order to make healthcare a right in our state and to learn what you can do to help win healthcare for all this year. \nCo-sponsored by Campaign for New York Health\, NYS Poor People’s Campaign\, New York State Nurses Association\, Coalition for Economic Justice\, Melanated Moms\, Syracuse United Neighbors\, ARISE.
